Are You Getting The Right Care During This Pandemic?

There is a concern that people are not getting the healthcare they need in a timely manner due to fears about getting the COVID-19 virus in the emergency room (ER). It seems people think they need to avoid the ER because it is overcrowded with COVID-19 cases or they fear contracting the virus.

This is an understandable fear but the statistics are very concerning to me as a patient advocate, whose mission it is to ensure people get the best healthcare at the right time.  A recent survey of nine major hospitals earlier this month showed that the number of severe heart attacks being treated in U.S. hospitals had dropped by nearly 40% since this pandemic started.  This has led to physician’s being concerned that patients are not going to the ER for an emergency and are waiting too long to get attention, which could lead to more permanent damage or worse.

Another alarming statistic is that EMT’s in New York City reported a quadrupling of house calls for cardiac symptoms between March 30 and April 5. In the majority of cases, the patient could not be resuscitated. Some of the cases could have been due to COVID-19 but others may have been due untreated heart problems and strokes.

Neurologists are observing that the stroke units are unusually quiet. The concern that people are not addressing signs of stroke is also real, as is the lower incidence of cases of appendicitis which is another life-threatening condition if left untreated.

Is everyone taking the Stay At Home order too literally?  I think so! In the cases of any serious health symptoms, signs of stroke, intense pain or any other emergent need, it is essential to go to an ER. You can call ahead to your local hospital and see what arrangements they make for emergent cases that do not have COVID-19.  Many hospitals have set up completely different areas for COVID-19 affected cases and those that are not affected. If there is any doubt about the seriousness of your symptoms, do not hesitate to call 911. There are equipped and prepared and waiting could cause terrible consequences!
