5 of the Filthiest Places to Avoid on Airplanes

As we head into cold and flu season, I was most interested in this headline I read in the Time Health newsletter this week. http://bit.ly/2r6WFq7.  In general, as nurse advocates and health & wellness coaches, we always emphasize the need for cold and flu precautions at this time of year (stay tuned for that upcoming blog). But for those of you that travel, here are some specific precautions to take anytime of year.

Do you think your plane has been cleaned thoroughly between flights? Think again! Many times the planes (except for the cleaning of bathrooms, they say) are not always cleaned well due to quick turnaround times.   To protect yourself, carry a bottle of hand sanitizer and wipes and use them regularly. Wash your hands thoroughly and as often as possible.  You can also use a paper towel or tissue to use to touch the bathroom door, sink faucets or toilet flushers to protect yourself. The following is the list of areas tested for germs on planes and were found to host many organisms. Traveler beware!

  • Airplane tray tables

  • Seatbelts

  • Air vents

  • Restroom

  • Seatback pocket

  • Tops of aisle seats
