It's Time To Celebrate! Healthlink Advocates is Ten!

It's Time To Celebrate! Healthlink Advocates is Ten!

As I sit here planning my day and prioritize which client is most in need of my help, it dawns on me that tomorrow March 10, 2020, is the tenth anniversary of starting my business, Healthlink Advocates.

Challenged and Inspired

I reflect on the time the idea came into my head. I was recovering from a massive surgery and was pretty much "slapped on my back" for months. I was dedicated to my healing and took the next right baby steps each day towards recovery, hard as it all was. I remained hopeful and proud of my baby steps and was patient with the process. For those of you who know my younger self, patience was not my big strength. I was used to forging forward with lightning speed when I wanted something.

Being thrown back into the healthcare system, albeit as a patient, made me yearn to do something using my nursing skills and to help people directly, but I was not inclined to go back to floor nursing.

Caregiver Shortage! This Is Real!

Caregiver Shortage! This Is Real!

My last blog was about the importance of caregivers and the need to appreciate them. Today I write about a shortage in the number of caregivers available to provide this important service.

Is your loved one in a long term care facility or in need of a home care nursing assistant? If so, read on for very important information that can significantly impact the care your loved one receives.

As a nurse-patient advocate, I have tended to many clients either in an assisted living or a nursing home facility as well as those being cared for at home by a nursing assistant/health aide. These are the vital caregivers for the aged and sick who provide the day to day essential non-clinical care. In the January 27th, 2020 issue of Modern Healthcare, the cover story “No One To Care” got my attention and concern.

The Shortage is Real

These long-term healthcare providers are finding it increasingly difficult to hire and retain nursing assistants/health aides, leaving care for patients in jeopardy.

Caregiver Appreciation Day! Our Unsung Heroes!

Caregiver Appreciation Day! Our Unsung Heroes!

Today is a day to honor all of the caregivers in our country caring for the sick, elderly, disabled and young children. We at Healthlink Advocates, we interact with caregivers every day and see the heavy physical and emotional workload they bear for the care of their patients. As mothers, we know the work that goes into raising a child. Caring for the disabled is a full-time job as well. These are all of our heroes today and every day. These heroes matter and need to be cared for also.

Caregivers Matter

Caregivers are such an important part of our lives. We may be a caregiver or we may have been taken care of by one. It is a quiet and oftentimes unrecognized service.

High Tech Heart Health

High Tech Heart Health

What if I told you that there was technology for monitoring your heart function, such as blood pressure or heart rate that could be found in your shoe, your cell phone or your watch? Would you think that was something coming in the future? Well, I am here to tell you that this technology exists today.

National Heart Awareness Month

February is National Heart Awareness month and as a nurse patient advocate who is always looking at healthcare products that can empower clients, I will share some digital heart technology that can be used by you to monitor your heart function.

Is Self-Care a Necessity or an Indulgence? You be the Judge!

Is Self-Care a Necessity or an Indulgence? You be the Judge!

How important is putting ourselves first in life? Many of you may have grown up being told “don’t be selfish” and that your needs come second. Is this a healthy thought? Current research is showing that you cannot function very well if you don’t take care of ourselves. Just think of what is said on a plane when the flight attendant is doing the safety checks, “put the oxygen mask on yourself first’, if not you won’t be able to take care of others, such as your children or people who need assistance.

What is this Patient Advocate's Why?

What is this Patient Advocate's Why?

I start my day thinking about all of my clients and who needs help., as if they are a family member. As a nurse patient advocate, I am in the midst of crises almost everyday with my clients. One client may be in the hospital critically ill, one may be learning of a surprise discharge from the hospital and is not ready, yet another is overwhelmed with the news of a devastating diagnosis.

Rise Up And Feel Good Each Morning

Rise Up And Feel Good Each Morning

Do you wake up on the right side or the wrong side of the bed each morning?  Do you wake up excited about the day or are you just putting one foot in front of the other? Are you tired of everyone telling you should be happy or upbeat?  Do the massive amount of tips for feeling good and healthy leave you high and dry?

There’s an answer to that!  Be yourself, know thyself and accept yourself.  You are a unique and wonderfully made individual with your own path to greatness. This simply means, get to know who you are and what you want to be and do.   Take an overall inventory of yourself and find the magic inside.  Be patient with the process.

The Wellness Inventory process allows you to explore the many wonders of you as a whole person.  You can take a spin around the wheel of wellness and find a deeper understanding of what works for you and what motivates you to improve.  Improving your overall wellbeing, can help you stay healthy or if you are challenged with a chronic illness, it can help you manage it better.

Challenged with a Chronic Disease? Behavior Change Coaching Can Help

Challenged with a Chronic Disease? Behavior Change Coaching Can Help

There can be so many factors to deal with when one has a chronic disease such as diabetes and heart disease, to name a few. Oftentimes, patients can find themselves overloaded with information from their physician, from Internet searches and from family and friends. This can be overwhelming and can stop a patient in their tracks. Which way should they turn and whom do they listen to? Primarily, it is essential to first listen to your physician, who is the expert on the chronic disease and is focused on helping manage the illness with needed treatments and medications.

Healthy Living.....Always

Healthy Living.....Always

Does it seem impossible to live healthy always? How is it possible to live healthy if you have a chronic disease? Is healthy living possibly more than whether you have a disease or not?

Living healthy refers to how you manage your health in your mind, body, and spirit. As a nurse-patient advocate, I have witnessed people with serious illnesses live better and more meaningful lives than some that are extremely healthy and blessed with financial abundance. Why is this? It relates to the individual's overall level of wellness.

The World Health Organization defined health in 1948 as being “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.  Later, Halbert Dunn, MD, head of U.S. Office of Vital Statistics, wrote a book called "High-Level Wellness". He writes about a definition of wellness to include the following core concepts:

  • Wellness is a continuum rather than a specific fixed state. All individuals, depending on their particular circumstances, are located somewhere along the continuum between death and wellness.

January is Thyroid Awareness Month

January is Thyroid Awareness Month

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of the neck just below the Adam's apple. Although relatively small, the thyroid gland plays a huge role in our body, influencing the function of many of the body’s most important organs, including the heart, brain, liver, kidneys and skin. Ensuring that the thyroid gland is healthy and functioning properly is vitally important to the body's overall well-being.  As patient advocates, we have seen many clients who have complicated endocrine disorders such as with the thyroid and oftentimes this can affect the whole body system.
